The other day, I was in a record store and saw a 45's price guide from 1978. I meant to inquire about buying it but forgot and left without asking if it was for sale.

A 1978 45 guide woulda been Hamilton-Osborne. There was also a House Of Collectibles price guide for records at this time, which was was even more inaccurate than H-O. The HOC books were credited to a non-existent house nom de plume. . .

TROGGY

The first Hamilton-Osborne 45 guide for O' Sullivan-Woodside in 1976 had one of the bestest covers ever: a cartoon of a collector sitting atop stacks of records he had just found and reading the H-O price guide! Loved the concept and the art, done by a local (Phoenix, AZ) cartoonist who's name escapes me.

You're right Neal, I usta have that, maybe still do, there were a bunch of boxes that said Sun 209 & other record numbers - labels that serious collectors knew by heart. Oh yeah, there was a sign saying records 10 cents each.

If one is buying a 45 at 2$ on feeBay that is guided at 6$ but the buyer is also paying 4$ shipping, isn't he paying guide for the record? Never forget about the ship cost. It must be figured into the equation. When dealing with true NM- copies, the guide is useless because there will be a buyer for the item at whatever price attached to it. I had no problem paying over guide for a stack of unplayed Motown/Spector produced 45s in a shop last week. I only bought a guide for reference purposes when dealing with re-issues, different labels info and getting catalog numbers for my 'little black book 'that I carry around with me when shopping.
