The ‘Pig Snoots’ 45 was originally released on the Norman label in 1968 and then picked up by ATCO who also gave it a picture sleeve release. The Norman release can set you back a few dollars but the ATCO release is easy to find. The reissue label Vampi have a pressing on the racks at the moment.

The Natural Bridge Bunch are probably a studio creation who existed solely to record the track ‘Pig Snoots’. They don’t appear to have released any other records. Writing credits are shared between Andre Williams and Oliver Sain, both soul and funk producers whose records remain in demand.

‘Pig Snoots’ has a bubblegum element of a most demented bent and bounces along with a twangy guitar that hints at country but is miles from it. The backing vocals sound like they are delivered by snotty trailer trash in a viciously flirtatious mood. Williams sounds, basically, wrecked in a jolly, hoarse kind of way.

Despite the gross subject matter the song is lascivious in the kind of way that has perverse appeal to the post Cramps retro punk crowd. The backing vocalists chime in with something that sounds like, “Cute pork sure is good pork.” And Williams, in a gruff nicotine bark, replies “Sho’ is” and then laughs and chuckles as the track bounces off.

‘Pig Snoots’ doesn’t really do genre, it’s sort of nowhere and everywhere all at once. In some ways it’s a hint at things to come for Williams as it points to the swamp grunge he will produce in his later years.
