I guess we all know that the first six releases( or so) of Nick Perls blues label was first issued as Belzona before changing name to Yazoo, but does anyone know why?

This excellent site http://www.wirz.de/music/yazoofrm.htm does not provide any answer, but it's good to have a (hopefully) reliable labelography.

When Perls was in Britain attending the 2nd National Blues Convention (September 1969) he recounted the story. From memory there was a long established multi-national industrial company of that name who requested Perls to "cease and desist" from using the name or face litigation.

Oops! I see now that an explanation IS included on the Wirz-site. I missed it the first time around: "Following the release of Belzona 1006, the Scottish country dance label "Beltona", operating since the 1930's, lodged an injunction against the name "Belzona" on the grounds that it would confuse distributors customers due to the similarity of names. Nick Perls then changed the label's name to "Yazoo" and re-released Belzona 1001-1006 as Yazoo 1001-1006 with minor changes."

That makes sense. That explanation must be a relatively recent addition to Stefan's discography. Moral? Never rush into print or rely upon rely upon memory.
