We'll give it a rest until later, when we can begin with " DETROIT-C-1 "

It's looking more like 400 labels than what I initally thought from Detroit ( appox: 200! )

Again, I have an " old " Chicago directory ( yellow pages ) and last week I had a look under " Phonograph Records-Wholesale and Manufacrts " ( sic ) and there are no-less-than FIFTY SIX " active " indie labels ( EXCLUDING Chess (etc ) Vee Jay*, Curtom / Mayfield / Wndy C, etc )
(* Vee Jay had relocated to Los Angeles, but was STILL listed in the Chicago directory )

I do hope if only one or two of you get something out of this, that'll do it for me.

Thank you.

H

My hope for 2014 is to find a box of these 45s somewhere.....

I gotta admit, I wouldn't have thought that there were that many labels in existence in one city. I guess a lot of 'em only had a handful of releases....?

Thanks, Heidler.

Hello wurlitzer1450...

Yesterday was my birthday ( burp ) but I've now had a chance to scour the Chicago directory again under various headings ( sometimes, in some phone directories, one could find Distributors under " Music " and/or " Records " headings )

I remember sometime back you posted a sleeve with " Ruby Sales " information, but this directory does not list them as far as I know.

Perhaps when I sort the " Chicago " card-files ( as I'm doing with Detroit at the moment ) I might be able to find something*
(* I can usually do most Los Angeles-based labels, Distributors, Pressing Plants, Agents / Managers, etc by memory, but I can't do so with areas such as Chicago, Detroit, Houston, Memphis, or Nashville, or New York City, nor Philadelphia! )

There is one little-connected item that could be of some interest to you....

A fellow by the name of Earl RUBY once ran a " small record distributorship in Chicago " before he relocated to Detroit and opened a dry-cleaning establishment under the name of Cobo, later changed to Ruby ( Earl was one of the brothers of the more infamous Jack, who shot and killed Lee Harvey Oswald )

I am NOT claiming that " Ruby Sales " was in-fact Earl Ruby's, but it does make one wonder ? Earl and his brothers were involved with many small businesses in Chicago, before Earl moved to Detroit, and Jack eventually wound-up in Dallas....

I'll do further research when I get through the Chicago " cards "
In the meantime, we'll get back to Detroit when I further recover ( burp )

Thanks!

H ( burp )
