My dad is selling his record collection. It is mainly classic rock in great condition.
He has approx. 4,000 vinyls. He has been collecting since the mid 60's.
He is interested in selling the entire collection instead of piecing it out.
Any suggestions would be most helpful.

Thanks so much!

Molly

The problem with selling the whole thing is that generally speaking, you'd have to take wholesale, and wholesale is about 10% of retail. So a dealer is likely to offer you about $2000 for 4000 records, assuming they are good titles in nice condition.

You might do better selling directly to collectors in large lots. If somebody gets a chance to buy for his own collection, he is likely to buy large quantities at maybe 30-50% of retail. Just be careful if you don't know values - an experienced collector, offered a chance to pick whatever he wants at $5 a pop, will take every big-money record in the collection and leave you with the stuff that is a hard sell.

You might consider actually hiring an experienced record collector or dealer as a consultant to value the collection, and pay him in cash, not vinyl, so there is no conflict of interest. He would be able to tell you how to try to realize better value.

I believe there are also guys who sell on eBay on commission, who split the money evenly with the consignor. Getting 50% when somebody else does all the work should be acceptable.

Well, good luck!

I agree with vinyl1's information. If you don't want to do the work of creating a list of titles with grades, then you should probably ring a place like Amoeba and have them come over and see it / give you an offer.
You can also accept want lists from interested individuals and then look them up in your collection, see if you have those and then state prices. I know some people who do it this way. Depends on if you need them gone right away or not.
