Just found out he passed away...

http://www.usatoday.com/story/life/music/2014/07/17/blues-legend-johnny-winter-dies-in-switzerland/12771833/

I never have delved into his catalog very much, but I knew he was a great guitarist. I've held him in high regard for getting some great tracks from Muddy Waters later on in his life:

RIP, Mr. Winter, and many thanks.

Yep, we lost another blues master. Rest easy, Mr. Winter. You will be missed.

Mack, you should start at the beginning. Hit youtube and listen to his first album - The Progressive Blues Experiment. It's been a favorite for many, many years. Tommy Shannon is the bassist. He later played with Stevie Ra Vaughan & Double Trouble. For me, the highlight of the album is their take of Muddy Waters' Rollin' And Tumblin'.

Thanks for the suggestion. I've seen that album pop up a time or two. I'll seek out a copy and give it a listen.

Must confess that Johhny Winter's own recordings are not really my speed, but the Muddy Waters" Lp "Hard Again" that he produced was a big favourite, especially "Mannish Boy" and the first Muddy LP I owned. Thank you for the introduction Mr Winter, you were one wild looking bluesman.

It's said that Hendrix recorded the definitive version of "All Along The Watchtower". The Same Should be said of Winter's Version of "Highway 61".

Johnny Winter will be a great addition to the band in Rock And Roll Heaven.

Just two weeks ago I took my video "Woodstock Diaries" to my daughter and son-in-law's place.
There is a clip of Johnny Winter on that, amazing slide guitar. He is into all the "modern" bands and was staggered by that performance.

I second this opinion! Fare well and may you find peace of mind, wherever you are Johnny.

I still have his 'Second Winter' album, a three-sided double LP - still an outstanding album with this certain dynamic cover art.

An amendment to my previous posting. I thought it would be a proper way to offer our sympathy to Johnny W.
A great album, great centerfold cover art from 1969

Again thankx to 'The Album Cover Art Galery'
