ALACARTE

Sorry but I haven't been paying a lot of attention to this thread. The MAN jacket shows off Griffin's post-psychedelic style, after he had converted to Christianity. It is interesting but, for my taste, does not approach his earlier style and work.

This cover is by Wallace Wood, perhaps the best artist (in terms of execution and style) whose work graced the pages of MAD Magazine.

I agree with your judgment about this cover artwork. Of course it is unique in execution and design. What a pity, that the cover has been damaged thru' this cello tape.
I have various 'Comic-Art-Cover' in my collection, but just a very few can compare with this work.

I would have bought this one as well, without considering the damage.

FELLOW GUILDERS

I attended the EC Comic Convention in NYC in 1972, the first and, alas, final such event. It was an EC collector's dreamcometrue! Many of the artists, writers, and editors from EC's heyday were there, including the inimitable Wallace Wood. He was voted top SF artist of the '50s by the attendees.

For sheer beauty and grace in comic book art, check out his work for Tower's two big attempts at breaking into the superhero field, T.H.U.N.D.E.R. AGENTS and DYNAMO. The characters were second-rate, the plots predictable, but, boyoboy, Woody's art is breathtaking. . .

NEAL

PS: He also did some really farout soft-core porn comic strips for some men's mags in the '50s and early '60s.
