I have a few 45's with a metal adapter. They have "webster-chicago corporation" stamped on them. What exactly are they?

Hey Poncho, what's goin' on!

The Webster-Chicago Corporation, aka Webcor, made quite a few things, including the wire recorder and some of the earliest models of the reel-to-reel tape recorders. They used to use a vacuum tube for a VU meter! Shocked

Check this one out...picked it up today at Goodwill...pretty interesting 45 adapter also..Cardboard sleev is in pretty good condition also....I am afraid to take out the adapter as it feels like the record will break...anyone know anything about this particular label? Or the adpater for that matter...it is metal, pretty heavy for someting so small..its says Webster Chicago Corporation one one side and Patent Applied For on the other.

Yes, I know how to take these out, but it is difficult to tell someone how to do it, the record has to be flexed & the center will slide out. This is why you find all those 50s 45s with broken spots around the center hole, people trying to take these centers out. Since this is a waltz & not worth anything it is a good one to practice on, good luck!

Here's pic of one of those pesky metal 45 adapters. The metal ones were the first I remember seeing in the early 1950s. When 45s first came out these were sold because most folks had no idea how to get the 45s to center on the spindle because of the large hole the 45s had & the 78s had a small hole. I remember trying to center the first 45s on the turntable I bought in the mid 50s without an adapter. Some of the 45s from the early 1950s came with a "optional center" or OC as Capital called it. Capitol even put these OC 45s in a special sleeve. Again, I will caution you : if you do not know how to take these metal pieces out do not attempt it! As with everything you do with a desirable record practice on a junk one first. These metal adapters are the reason there are so many good 45s with the center hole broken out.

Ummm... June Carter. Not familiar with that "Juke Box Blues"... a good one?

Big fan of her "Left Over Lovin'", also on Columbia.

I think it is her best, very uptempo, it is so close to being RAB, it's what I call an "ARAB" record---Almost Rock A Billy.
