Just checked and it was King Coleman - Black Bottom Blues - Canadian Columbia w/co sleeve. I actually got 75 quid for it, so $150.

Trying to get a handle on the real meaning of popcorn music I see in listings.Just as MANY put northern soul in a title which is ridiculous when what they are selling has nothing to do with soul..northern or otherwise....popcorn is stuck in tons of listings. My idea is that popcorn is light poppy 60s stuff that really doesn't have an edge to it...Am I far off ..Thanks .

There actually is a traceable origin of the word, even if the music is hard to describe. The term comes Belgium, where the clubs started focusing on various "lighthearted and fun" R&B and soul, and also some upbeat pop; my impression is that they were looking for dance music that wasn't being played in British or American clubs. In 1970 a club named "Dancing Popcorn" opened in Antwerp and that, from what I can tell, represents the origin of the word "Popcorn" to describe this music. I'm pretty much at a point where I can identify something as "popcorn" when I hear it and then do the research to see that others have referred to it that way previously; a couple of times, though, for Ebay sales I've called something "popcorn" just because I think so, even though no one else has called it that.

Add to that many of the popcorn records have a bit of beat that might be called latin though they may not be latin records.

Here's the best history of Belgian Popcorn I've seen - it gives a great descriptor of how it came into being.
