This has already been discussed here, but

Elvis Costello - Armed Forces (January 5, 1979) was the first LP to be issued with a barcode here in the US.

This could be the first record with a defaced bar code, The Clash's "Cost of Living" EP issued in the UK on May 11th, 1979.

Before barcodes...some Warner Bros albums also have the little sticker on the back upper right corner,what was this sticker for ?

I also have seen some Gefen releases with a similar type sticker....

Ah, good question. I have seen many of these stickers and even searched online, but can find no answer as to their origins.
Hopefully somebody here will shed some light...

IIRC these and the WEA hologram stickers were intended to counter counterfeiting of their product ... under the presumption that retailers were alerted that only authentic copies had the sticker applied. At the time, Geffen was distributed by WEA.

When did bar codes first appear on LP covers ? Can the absence of a bar cade help date an LP that is obviously a re-issue ?
