And not just in an alphabetical sense!

I had The Charms and Otis Williams And The Charms filed separately ("C" and "W" respectively) and it dawned on me - they're the same group...

I solve situations like that by just selling every record involved.

Good idea ! Instead of trying to figure out where everything goes alphabetically, just sell it and not have to deal with it. Duh ! Rolling Eyes

In over 25 years of sorting and categorizing, I have been through all of these same problems.
Even after I think I have it all figured out, some band name will throw a wrench in the works.

The genre thing I do consider licked. I list and shelve lps alphabetically. Any genres are added in my database as a keyword.
So, if Led Zeppelin had a reggae album, it would still be shelved alphabetically (and chronologically) by artist, but would have the reggae annotation in my database which then can be sorted and searched when I am in the mood for some island music. I would find it impossible to shelve by genre as many lps have songs of different genres on a single disc.

Hello, I'm a newbie here and I'm just going through the process of cataloging and organizing my record collection.

And I'm stuck with artists like Muddy Waters. M for Muddy or W for Waters? Or perhaps M for Morganfield?

And if Muddy goes to W for Waters, then should I put Howlin' Wolf to W too?

Any propositions are well welcome!

Welcome to the RCG!

In the case where an artist uses and is best known by a nickname, I file like this:

Howlin' Wolf (born Chester Arthur Burnett)

In the "H" section, between Layton Howerton and Freddie Hubbard.

Muddy Waters (born McKinley Morganfield)

In the "M" section, between Mudhoney and Maria Muldaur.

Cactus, shouldn't Muddy be placed before Mudhoney ?? Laughing

D'oh!!! Mad Yes, you are correct.

I just put Muddy in his rightful place, between Moxy and Mudhoney.

This is an interesting thread. I recall people coming into my store looking for Rolling Stones, but they all went to the "S" section first. Then they yell at me "Hey, where are the Stones???" Rolling Eyes

I do have a couple of genre sections in my collection outside of the main alpha body. I sort hardcore blues into a Blues section for when I want blues only. I also have a Soundtrack section (not that many) and a Misc section for sound effects and other weird things.

In another note, I agree that certain forms of organization work better in different situations. My method of sortation would not be appropriate in a retail setting.
