Wow. I love the cover. I gave these kids the google treatment and it seems they were pretty good. The LP is from 1981. I wish I knew the names of the musicians on this so I could see if any of them continued in Jazz.

And check this out:

The link is for "Chief's Blues" from the album. Great piece and the kids play it really well.

Here's a couple of photos, from the back cover. I'd have to check, but I know there's at least one more LP issued by Hemet High School Jazz Band in the big lot of Jazz records that are out in my shop awaiting cleaning & filing.

Thanks for the pics, Cowboy. I don't see any names that jump out at me, but i might just look around the web. and I'd like to see any others that you have by the Hemet High Jazz group(s). From what i've seen online, there were other LPs released and it's said that the late 1980's-early 1990's Jazz ensemble was astounding in their ability.

By the by, Cowboy, what else was in your big jazz score?

I've posted a number of female Jazz singers here in the Hipster's Hop, but I haven't done much to enhance the reputation of female Jazz musicians (aside from Pianists). It's high time I started. So, here are a few women of Jazz to delight the eyes.

This artist is possibly the most obscure of the bunch. Clora Bryant was a great trumpeter. She played/collaborated with Dizzy and Bird, backed Billie Holiday at a few live appearances in California and vocalist Billy Williams in the early 1960s and led her own group for a number of years. She was also the first female Jazz musician tour communist Russia (at the invitation of Mikhail Gorbechev) in 1989. Unfortunately, she only got to record a single LP under her own leadership ("A Gal With A Horn"; Mode 106; 1957...incidentally, well worth seeking out).

This is an all female group who recorded one LP, which is impossibly rare (although with ebay in the picture who knows). You might find it in a yard sale in the Rochester, NY area, where the record was recorded live. The Line-up is composed of a couple of women you may know and the rest you probably won't.

Mary Osbourne - Guitar
Vi Redd - Tenor
Marian McPartland - Piano
Lynn Milano - Bass
Dottie Dodgion - Drums

Esperanza Spaulding...in addition to being an excellent bass player, she's a fine singer.
