I am studying Graphic Design at Leeds College of Art. My latest project is Collection 100. I have photographed and categorised 100 albums from my vinyl record collection. I am trying to find interesting links between Vinyl/album art work i.e. graphic designers/photographers and other more tenuous links.

If you know any interesting facts or links about album artwork I would be interested to hear them here.

Though I prefer a jacket or sleeve in the best possible condition, I collect to play the music. So, the condition of the vinyl is the most important part.

( ( ( ( ( ((((((( Cool
This is a tricky question and not an easy one to answer. Though I collect vinyl because of the music, I do love a tasty cover/sleeve of LPs as well as of singles. I just wanna speak for myself, I'm willing to pay a higher price if the cover of a record, no matter whether it's a LP or a single, is in at least "VG+" condition. To be honest, I never would buy an album without a cover, and in regard of singles, it has to be a more than scarce item, if I would buy it without a sleeve, preferably picture sleeve.

Every time I play a record, I display the cover/sleeve, because for me only both makes this package complete and I love to watch it while the vinyl rotates. I own about 3,000 singles and about 85% have a picture-/art sleeve. Over here in Europe it's more common, that at least a limited quantity of the first pressing contains a sleeve or even cardboard cover. What I love most is double 7-inch singles in fold-out sleeves.

It's the music mainly, but it's less interesting without a nice cover or sleeve. Therefore my vote goes for 'Why?' (should I make this decision!)

Not essencial, but if the packaging is great, it really adds something.

Interesting indeed. I have payed top dollar for Prince records from different countries because the sleeve was different. However, I wouldn't do that for anybody else. If I have a choice I enjoy getting a picture sleeve but if not, no big deal.

Ultimately....no imo. The vinyl is what is used to listen to, but the cover is important enough
for me to decide if buying or not.

Hi,

This is most interesting to me also.

I am studying an MA in Graphic Design at Sheffield Hallam University, England. I am undertaking a project based around artwork design for music products, in particular comparing physical formats with digital ones. An essential part of my research is to understand exactly why vinyl (and its artwork) has so much allure for collectors such as yourselves.

I'd really like to see the results when some more people have completed the poll.

I have a poll of my own on another board, please take a look: http://www.recordcollectorsguild.org/index.php?name=PNphpBB2&file=viewtopic&t=70396
