To make a long story short - I know that (generally) the best way to distinguish legitimate copies of the first four Elvis 'Sun' singles, is to look for the 'push-marks'. However, I am currently looking at a copy of 'Mystery Train', which I know was the only copy to NOT have push marks.

Aside from the matrix numbers (45-U-156X 20 on the "Mystery" side, 45-U-157X 20 on the "I'm Left" side), are there any other factors that I should be looking at to help determine authenticity?

Thanks.

If possible, play the record - you should hear the famous SUN hiss in the run-in groove and after the song ends until the needle lifts up. The originals have mostly a big hiss, caused by the cheap vinyl mix that was used for the pressings.

On a repro/bootleg you will hear no hiss in the run-in groove, the hiss starts with the beginning of the song and ends with it (it was cut from an original sun record, so the hiss is on the song). The vinyl looks very shiny and new - not like vinyl that was used in the fifties by a small company.

On my copy (see the scans) everything looks a little rough - it looks really old. The bootlegs (even the 70's Mariano ones) are looking a bit too "new". The "I forgot" label is interesting - there is a kind of ring that was in the pressing plate and could be seen on the label.

The matrix numbers are right and if it feels right and sounds like an old SUN original, then it is the real deal. Very Happy

Hi Sun: I never thought of the fact that you should hear the 'hiss' before and after the music. Great point. I already have copies of Elvis #210 and #217, so I have a pretty decent eye for what the labels should look like - but a little extra info never hurts. THANKS!
