I have a promotional copy of "To Lefty From Willie" album. On back of album covr in top left corner there is a gold stamp that says "For promotion only, ownership reserved by CBS, sale is unlawful". I have searched on the internet for a while and have yet to find one like this. Is anyone familiar with this particular record?

This is a common way that Columbia records marked their promo albums. I've got a few myself.

Welcome to the RCG.

I'm not familiar with that record, but gold stamped promos were common in the late 70s and into the 80s. Being a Willie Nelson record, I wouldn't think it would be particularly rare.

Thanks for the help. My dad gave me a basket full of records and asked me to sell on ebay. In researching all of them to make sure I was not over pricing and that particular record was hard to find with that stamp.

That is what it looks like except it is stamped over a star and what I am assuming is CBS logo

If you're wondering about value, this kind of stamp doesn't really affect it either way.

There's a lot of useful info here, and a lot of helpful folks as well. Feel free to ask further questions if you like.

If the disk labels do not indicate "promotional use only" or "not for sale" or similar wording, your item is what is termed a "designate promo" this is a 'regular' retail stock copy that was pulled from distribution to use as a promotional copy. By the 1980s the record companies evidently decided it was cheaper to stamp the album cover than to print up separate promotional labels.

This forum is very helpful. I really appreciate the response. Don't know much about records so I am learning alot.
It does say Deomonstration Not for Sale on the record label of the Willie Nelson album.
I am having some trouble with some folk albums also. Ex: Folk songs of USSR & The Red Army Choris of USSR. These are some very thick records. The record labels say Keynote Recording. If anyone knows about these that would be great.

Am I correct in assuming that "Promo" copies will be first pressings or at the very least very early pressings?
