Anyone got a somewhat clear idea about Arhoolie labels and how and when they changed over the years? I believe the dark red label is the earliest but then what...?

I've seen both the red label as well as a black (predominant)-red label but only on some of the newer items. I've only bought Clifton Chenier's works on Arhoolie label but a friend of mine picked up a CD at Ottawa's Bluesfest and I was taken back by the revamped look. Not sure if this was something limited to CD pressings. Hope this helps!

What I was trying to find out was for how long the first "Dark-red-with-big-guitar" label lasted. This site http://www.vinylbeat.com/cgi-bin/labelfocus.cgi?label=ARHOOLIE&label_section=A,B,C is rather vague with its "...first few releases". The latest label of this kind I've seen is F 1008 I think.

I've got quite a few Arhoolies, but they're all the red/black type. I can't help with the labels as such, but this site has a discography which does depict a handful of Arhoolie labels:

OK. Thanks guys. I've checked the Stefan Wirz great site and he don't seem to have the information. However, I think that when he posts a label scan on a specific issue it's probably to show the the Big Guitar/Dark Red label is confirmed that far. So, this would mean that the first label, at least, goes as far as F 1012.

Oops! A quick check on eBay/Popsike confirms the Big Guitar/Dark Red Label as far as F 1021 (Fred McDowell).

In 1971 Chris described at great length in Arhoolie Occasional 1 the early days of Arhoolie LPs where he only had limited funds to produce sufficient labels and plain sleeves which he had to glue onto the vinyl as well as the front and back wrapped around sheets of front photo and sleeve notes on rear. These very very limited, do-it-yourself editions. I guess these are photo 1.

FWIW I have the Arhoolie F series from 1001-1075, all labels as shown in 2A and the R series 2001-2018 are the same.

There was also a six track EP King Biscuit Time (530) of Rice Miller's last King Biscuit radio show. Also on red label dated 1975 and as shown in 2A.
