FELLOW GUILDERS

This is the story as I recall it; I may have some things wrong, which is why I am asking you folk.

Back in the 1990s, a rare psych album was uncovered by the ex-wife of one of the band members. While housecleaning, she found more than 100 copies of her ex-hubby's band's privately pressed psych album from 1969-70.

She took them to a local store where the guy tending it gave her a buck apiece for the records. Next day the owner came in and found he had more than a hundred copies of a $2,000 record!

He sold them through Goldmine (?) at $750 each, limit of two per customer. Sold out in a few weeks.

Anyone remember this story and can fill in the many blanks?

Best,

NEAL

Hi Neal,

I'm certainly not doubting the veracity of this story or the accuracy of your memory, but this sounds almost too good to be true.

Years ago I sold advertising space for a weekly publication and all of my clients were auto dealers and 'car guys.' One story I heard a couple times: An ad in the local paper reads "1963 Chevy $500" The guy (he's never mentioned by name) goes to look and meets the seller, an older woman. She explains that her son bought the car just prior to going to Vietnam. He died in combat and his car has been in the garage ever since, in storage. The guy pulls back the tarp to reveal a mint condition 1963 Corvette split window coupe. Smile

So would I. Anyway, the cheap Corvette story is a legend, not fact.

FELLOW GUILDERS

Thanks guys! I would swear—Swear, I tell yuh!—that I followed this story at the time that it occurred. The woman found 120+ copies, all unplayed Mint and most still sealed, thought nothing of them, sold them for a buck apiece to a friend watching a friend's store.

The owner came in, realized he had “stolen” the records and tried to find the woman, to no avail. The record listed in my price guide for $2,500 but he figured that this find would dramatically lower the vale.

So, he offered them at $750 each, two per customer. They sold out quickly and the moment he announced there were no more, his customers began offering their extra copy for $1,500. And they sold until the price got back up to $2,500.

Trouble is, I have a title in mind and yet there is NADA on the 'net about this story. Which should be legendary!!! I shall keep on keepin' on.

Yeah, I know other folk who remember the story but can't place it exactly. The record store owner DID run ads in Goldmine for the album at $750 apiece and two per customer. Lots of people remember that . . .

SID

"The Music Emporium" -- but I can't find any data on this anecdote online for this album.

Neal...Can you narrow down the Goldmine issue any?
I have basically every issue back to 1981.
