Good news, folks!!!

We had a hatching today! I was able to catch a glimpse of the first baby hatched. First time I've ever seen this with eagles. Thanks so much rooster for posting this. I'm very excited and thrilled by it all. Smile

Also, I saw earlier the other mate in the nest with the other one that was nesting on the baby and the other egg that hasn't hatched yet.

Here is a screenshot I took of the newly hatched baby. Not that good of a pic of it (it's laying down), but it's the best I could do for now. I'm sure there will be plenty baby eagle action in the near future.

Edit: Here is a nice video of Eagle Baby #1.

So cute!

I'm glad you're enjoying this as much as I am, Mr. Monkey. I missed the hatching this morning, but a few minutes ago at 4:21 pm EST I witnessed the changing of the guard as one eagle came in with some food (looked like a mole or some other small rodent). I got a quick glimpse of eaglet #1 as they changed positions. The second egg is as yet unhatched. This is an amazing cam.

Eaglet #1.

Gotta screenshot of him looking up! lol
It looks like he's already grown since he hatched this morning. That white part is his brother or sister that hasn't hatched yet.

I viewed a feeding time this morning. Dad was so gentle the way he went about feeding baby. He did not regurgitate food to the baby. He would pick off a small amount of whatever it was that he was feeding the baby and then allowed the baby to eat it out of his beak.

Pretty good setup that the eagle has for food storage at the nest I've noticed. I've noticed that if the animal that they bring back to the nest for food doesn't get totally eaten right away they save the remaining part on the "balcony" of the nest for later when baby is hungry. And it seems like there is always something to eat at the eagle's nest. Good thinking eagles. Smile

I've checked out that page a few times since this thread started and never saw anything but an eagle sitting around until this morning. I got to see the feeding at about 11am est, so a little while after you, Bush. Very interesting to watch, but the eagle blocked the prey and video quality is rather low so I couldn't tell what was on the menu. He was definitely gentle adjusting and readjusting his beak to get the proper angle and once he gave the little guy a piece that was too big and as the eaglet was having trouble with it the father was like, wait just let me take that back and chew it up a little more for ya. Very sweet. I reread through some of their history and if it's any indication they should be flying in early May.

I've also been watching this eagle cam. This eagle laid her first egg (of 2014) today, 2-23-14. This eagle cam has audio included.

The Raptor Resource Project brings you the Decorah Eagles from atop their tree near Decorah, Iowa.

They have a good video to help you tell the difference between the male and female.
