I thought I heard somebody say that handing out free condoms to 3rd graders was going to make this sort of thing go away.

Our 7th graders get a crash course on std's, birth control, and the reproductive system from Texas Tech physicians. I sat in on one session once…. 70 years old plus, likely retired, monotone. They boys were not interested.

Our 8th graders get a three day course on character and dating choices. It's a push for abstinence. Birth control is left for the last day if they have time to cover it. When covered the main idea is what's bad about it. The guts of the presentation is for both parties to wait until marriage to avoid STD's and unwanted pregnancies. The past few years the classes have been run through social studies. I've wondered why it's not done through science, but it's not about science really. They bring in lively speakers who have been trained in speaking to teens.

In high school they get hit with birth control again I believe. Not sure how that one is run.

I have no problem with teaching abstinence. But not separate of birth control as our district likes to do. By the time these kids get to high school they are involved.

Teen pregnancy rates in the US are down so that is something.

I think the rate is down because teens don't get nekid face to face anymore, they take nude selfies and send them out over social media instead.

When I was in high school, teenage girls were not blessed with 36 C cups and yoga pants!!

Much shame is felt when you've done a double take with your aging, failing eyes at the neighbors daughter! Embarassed Embarassed...and she's at an age where you shouldn't be doing doubt takes!!

Growth hormones in the food chain maybe? hmmmmm.

I recall articles on scientific studies concluding just that, especially the growth hormones used on cows. One of them some years ago gave an example of preteen girls in South America with breasts.

My hs years were at the beginning of the sexual revolution. Unfortunately for me, most of the girls considered me a paceficist Sad

Not much different than when I was in high school/college in the 90s.

The biggest difference between now and when I was a kid was the easy access to porn. The number of children using social media / video games to share themselves is amazing.

This isn't a kid problem though… this is an adult problem. Parents are putting these tools in kids hands with no training and no supervision.

I wouldn't leave my front door open 24 hours a day and allow my kid to go in and out as she pleased. Nor would I allow whomever to roam in and out of our house. But that is essentially what parents / guardians are doing to an incredible degree with cell phones, computers, and multi-player video games.

My 9-year-old had to sit through a class on the human body and reproductive activity and she was pretty well freaked out by the experience. I know these kids SHOULD know about this stuff (at my grade school, the girls got the "talk" in sixth grade...us boys had to settle for our wild imaginations which, of course, didn't kick in until at least seventh grade) but fourth grade is just a LITTLE too early to talk about it. Still, we are an open family here and my girls can ask me anything about anything - both I and my wife are not raising our daughters in the same closed-minded environment as my wife grew up in. What helps is that the girls look up to me, so when they learn that I remained "pure" until I was 20, maybe they'll follow my example.

Leading by example is the best parenting.

Though, I don't know if schools should be covering sex at so early an age where perhaps the kids are too immature to handle the knowledge. One might compare it to teaching a toddler how to make a fire. I'd say leave the subject to the parents when the kids ask questions and then cover it when children are in their early teens.

Yeah, we had a class on human anatomy and sexual reproduction as part of Physical Education in high school (I think I was a sophomore) and it was taught more as How Stuff Happens rather than How To Do It, so we had more of a mature attitude about the course. My 11-year-old, on the other hand, got ahold of this book "recommended" to her by her school, and it covered not only the How To Do It stuff (quite graphically) but the Bad Stuff Done (rape, etc.) - it really freaked her out, too, and I don't think she ever finished it. It literally gave her nightmares.
