Mr. Goffin died yesterday....

http://www.miamiherald.com/2014/06/19/4188972/gerry-goffin-carole-kings-ex-husband.html

Most headlines state he was Carole King's ex-husband. This is true, but he also CO-WROTE A NOTEWORTHY NUMBER OF CLASSIC TUNES!!!!! Sorry for the caps, but that's driving me nuts.

Looking at a list of songs he co-wrote (courtesy of Wikipedia), I am overwhelmed by the legacy he leaves behind. Everybody has their faves....some of mine are Up On The Roof, Pleasant Valley Sunday, Oh No Not My Baby, I'm Into Something Good (the Earl Jean version is just wonderful), and the fave-song-until-the-day-I-die One Fine Day.

RIP, Mr. Goffin, and thank you so very very much.

Damn, RIP. I'll just add that he co-wrote one of my favorite songs, "I Wasn't Born to Follow".

Very talented indeed, Gerry ( Gerald ) Goffin.

For too many years the poor bugger was often referred to only as the husband of Carole King ( rn: Carol Klein ) with only sometimes as her co-writer well into the 1980s.

Just wanted to point out some information about a wonderful book, written by my friend Ken Emerson:

" Always Magic In The Air " - ( " The Bomp And Brilliance Of The Brill Building Era " )
ISBN 0 14 30. 3777 3
Published 2005 by Penguin Books
375 Hudson Street
New York, New York 10014
336 Pages with 10 Pages of Black & White photos.
Release price: $ 16.00

MUCH information ( all well-researched ) with regard to the Goffins ( Gerry,Louise, and Sherry ) and loads of aditional information on the rest of the Brill Building song-writing-producing crew at 1619 Broadway, plus, some great stories of that " other " building, 1650 Broadway ( home to hundreds of indie labels and publishers-song-pluggers over those great years )

For those that are interested, do try and get a hold of a copy.
It was great company ( reading ) on some of those long-haul flights of yesteryear.
My copy is autographed by Jerry Leiber, and I sure wish I could have caught up with Ellie Greenwich.
Now, they are both gone, and now, Gerry Goffin will now join them, perhaps in those little writing rooms up there.

Thanks.

H

Finally found somebody who doesn't mention "ex-husband" in the headline:

How lucky us baby boomers are to have grown up during such a magical time. Lords of the music industry at the peak of their creativity competeing with each other for the top spots on the charts. The ranks are thining much too quickly. R.I.P
