Confused So I figured my beater needle needed replacing- so I swap it out. Details to follow.
I think its a p-mount cartridge. There are 2 screw slide areas where it attaches to the headshell- is that maybe out of geometry? What I'm noticing is to me seems like strong sibilance and lots of background noise. I have an old ADS speaker pair with a t-amp type amp. The 45 that sounds pretty bad is a mid 60's Columbia wlp that looks like it wasn't played much. Some of the other 45's I'm playing of similar age & wear sound kind of noisy too. Any thoughts? Tia-M
Ps- I will try to get a few pics later- to confirm what I'm g Embarassed Embarassed fing up

As I'm trying to uncover baby's garage bay- I throw on a few lp's. They sound remarkably clean (and good). Are there stylii that are better suited for 45's than lp's and vice versa? Tnx-m

Well that sure doesn't sound like a p-mount cartridge, so it could be out of alignment. What turntable and cartridge are you using?

My favorite for playing older mono 45s is an Ortofon OM or Concorde cartridge with a D25M stylus. The D25M is a 1.1 mil conical designed specifically for older mono discs. I sum the signal to mono with the switch on my phono preamp. Tracking at 3.0 grams, the D25M does an excellent job with old 45s.

Wow, looks like you've got your work cut out for you. Is this a collection or a hoard, or something in between? Looks like a lot of records. 10,000+?
