I was talking record collecting with some friends the other day and we started talking about those rare records where you need to know what to look for to realize that you've found something special. The only ones we could think of off the tops of our heads were:
The markings you need to find on the cover to discover you have a Beatles second-state Butcher cover.
The "Shelley 11/18/71" dead wax markings on some editions of the Rolling Stones' Hot Rocks.
The misspelling of "Papa Gene's Blues" on the first Monkees album (admittedly not as rare as the previous two examples).

Throwing this out there, what are some other examples?

There's a million of them out there. Some that come to mind are: Moby Grape-Finger cover,Mamas & Papas-toilet bowl cover, uncensored MC5 Kick Out The Jams,Damned album with Eddie & The Hot Rods picture on back cover.

I always have to pick up Simon & Garfunkel "Sounds Of Silence" with the Tiger Beat back cover whenever I find a good copy, even though not really that valuable or rare.

And Bob Dylan's "From A Buick 6" alternate version, accidentally released on the first stereo versions of Highway 61 Revisited ("nonbreakable" 2-eye stereo labels).

Uncensored David Bowie "Diamond Dogs" cover, Velvet Underground & Nico with Eric Emerson on the back, always check for posters in Dead Kennedys "Frankenchrist" and Dylan's "Greatest Hits", um...

I definitely don't take the old 78 book sets at face value - I find other titles inside all the time, some of which are much more interesting than the set itself.
