I have noticed a new grading being used on an online auction site over here in NZ.
'All these records are "Playable"'
WHAT?
Does this mean they go around when the turntable is revolving? or
that some sort of noise is audible when the arm is lowered? or
are they "mint" as some sellers claim?
I have put the question in on the ask question facility but not had response yet.

"Playbable" is very ambiguous. It means nothing of importance, but sounds nice in an ad. In MY mind, it means beat to hell but you can still play it without skipping.

Ask them to define or deal with people who understand real grading traditions.

"Playable", a term that covers a multitude of sins, I'd say beware, sounds like Goldmine's G grade at best.

In Freakonomics, there was a section on real estate, and how realtors selling their own homes often hold out longer on their own homes for selling (because they see all of the profit) whereas when selling your home, since they make comission based on a percentage of the final sale, $10,000 difference in a final sale means a whole lot to you (the seller) but might mean only $100 to them in commission to try to hold out and press for a better price. It also covered a list of adjectives and showed which ones were correlated to higher prices, and which were correlated to lower prices. In the case of the lower priced adjectives, they were generally words that you'd think of using when you had nothing better to say about the home (spacious, charming and great neighbourhood were among them). I think in record collecting terms, "playable" is one of these euphemistic terms. I agree with RidinTheWind, I'd assume the worst unless you can get them to provide a recognizable grade.
