ok So I am looking for the five best tunes of all time.

My thinking puts me at (in no particular order):

- OASIS – WONDERWALL;
- TEN YEARS AFTER – I’D LOVE TO CHANGE THE WORLD;
- BLACK SABBATH – HEAVEN AND HELL;
- DEL SHANNAN – RUNAWAY;
- RONETTES – BE MY BABY

What’s say you?

Led Zeppelin = Battle of Evermore
Bob Dylan = Desolation Row
Josh White = St. James Infirmary
Golden Earring = Radar Love
Black Sabbath = War Pigs the version off of Paranoid
This list could change at any particular time like even now I would like to put In My Time of Dying on the list but which one would I take out

( ( ( ( ( ((((((( .
      These are the tunes which came spontaneous to my mind:

        'Where do the Stars End' - Kevin Ayers (Harvest album That's What You Get Babe - SHSP 4106, 1980)

        'Teenage Kicks' - The Undertones (Good Vibration E. P. - GOT 4, 1978)

        'I Only Wish That I'd Been Told' - Whirlwind (Chiswick single - CHIS 103, 1978)

        'When You Where Mine' - Bette Bright (and The Illuminations) (Korova single - KOW 14, 1981)

        'Alley Cat Song' - Holly Cole (Holly Cole - T&M 1039, 2007)

      Could easily be continued up to numberless goodies !!

Five???? Add a zero or two to the end and then MAYBE I can give you a list, but only five? Great Googa Mooga, I made a "desert island discs" tape years ago and even THEN I had a hard time deciding what to put on in 90 minutes! I have to pass - WAY too many to list.

Yeah I guess “best” is pretty vague. What I am looking for is phonograph era modern music though pretty much any genre.

As for “five best”, therein lies the challenge. Yes it would be easy to list 10, 20 or maybe 100 but to give some thought not so much into which are deserving but more which ones to leave out makes it more difficult.

That's just as vague. Now you have to define 'modern' Smile .

The whole thing is a little absurd. You say 'phonograph era'. but 'phonograph' is a term which is usually restricted to cylinder recordings -a design principal which didn't make it past the 1920's.

The problem here is that you are trying to determine what is 'best' within a field which is largely subjective, i.e., my 'best 'is not your 'best'- mainly because we have different tastes in music - and another person would almost certainly produce yet another 'best'.

Unless you define the parameters of your question very closely, it really is a pointless exercise.

FWIW, most "best of" lists that I have seen boil down to the listmaker's favorites.
