As I've stated before, I don't like keeping track of monetary value when it comes to records, but I like looking at Collectorsfrenzy.com because it's interesting to see what does sell.

This was the top seller from a couple of days ago. Eight bids, two grand and change for the final bid, all for a record with no description at all.

Any idea why it went so high?

Here's the way I think about it. There's some guy who, to a Chinese collector, is the equivalent of Charley Patton or Robert Johnson on 78. An obscure 78 from the 30s or 40s would bring out the bidders. I couldn't find the specific 78 you mention--did you mean to put a link?

Groan! Yes, I meant to put a link, but I'm dumb.

Here it is:

I think heyjoe sized up the situation correctly. I look at those labels and have no idea who the artist is.

the lovely rockola is here with me and has not only translated the writing on the label but she knows the history of this famous chinese artist, she [Zhou Xuan] is well known in asia.
the label reads: Shanghai Nights by Zhou Xuan and the record company doesn't translate very well but roughly it means "Shanghai Hundred generation Record Company".

not even close to it, she is one of the top 7 pop singers of all time from china. i don't really know why this record sold for so much. i would rank Zhou with popular vocalists from the usa like doris day, peggy lee, jo stafford, and patti page. as to why this record sold for 2K could be poor Asians who made lots of money later in life and want the items they couldn't afford in their youth.
