Just wondering:

1. If the cover says SW 385 but the record says SO 385, does that mean they used an earlier pressing with a later cover?

2. The matrix on side one reads SO-1-385 z-17 #21. Side two reads SO2-385 z-12 #1. What do z-17/z-12 and #21/#1 mean?

I normally don't look at matrix info for anything, but for some reason this record caught my attention.

Thanks.

All 3 of my copies have The Beatles Hey Jude SW385 on their covers. The 3 different label variations are, The Beatles Again SO385, The Beatles Again SW385, and finally Hey Jude SW385. I thought that all covers issued with this album were the same, Hey Jude SW385. I also have similar matrix numbers, but I'm unsure what the z and number mean.

Thanks for the cover info. Much appreciated!!!

Can anybody shed any light as to how the matrix numbers worked in this case?

Aha! That makes sense. Thank you for the info.

Final question....what do the #21 / #1 numbers mean?

Secondary copies -- which copy of the stamper was being used. Exactly why they made copies at the late stages in the process is unknown. Sometimes, companies actually used a stamper as a source for a mother -- which is the REVERSE of the usual process.
