I got this today. I couldn't pass it up becaue it's so unusual. It's a 10" 33 1/3 record . On the labels, it says Made by Universal Company Limited Taiwan China, and UHM No. 9. That and HI FI is the only english except for the song lists.

Side A:
Blue Angel-Roy Orbison
Captain Buffalo (followed by Chinese characters in parentheses)
You Talk To Much-Frankie Ford
The Green Leaves of Summer-Bud & Travis
Pineapple Princess-Annette Funicello
My Girl Josephine-Fats Domino

Side B:
You Mean Everything To Me-Neil Sedaka
Let's Think About Living-Bob Luman
I Bet Your Pardon-Johnnt Burnette
Ballad of the Alamo-Bud & Travis
Twistin' U.S.A.-Danny & The Juniors
Blue Velvet-The Statues

The cover is heavy paper enclosed in plastic, with an opening in the middle for the record. It's like two plastic bags made together with an opening on one end for the record.

Does anyone have any information about this? It's probably not rare in Taiwan.

I do have a few of those too Nitro (some Steppenwolf and Black Sabbath if I recall it right) - this kind of packaging is very special for asian pressings..

There is one thing that makes your disc some kinda special in my eyes - this is the first label that I have seen that has more than 2 colors comming out of that plastic wrapped covers..

BTW did you play that disc already? I am just curious because the ones that I do have have some of the worst sound quality ever heard..

Some of those Taiwanese pressings came on coloured vinyl. I have a Beatles album from Taiwan titled "1965" (NOT "Beatles '65"). It has the same front sleeve as the Help cover & different back cover but different colours & came on bright Transparant Red Vinyl. I also have owned a Taiwanese pressing of "Aftermath" by the Rolling Stones on Orange Transparant Coloured Vinyl. I guess that the coloured vinyl releases are probably that little bit rarer. They all have those paper-thin covers coated in hard plastic (like some South American releases).

No, I haven't listened to it yet. I have about 30 to clean. After I put this post up, I realized there's a man where I work who is from Taiwan, so I can get it translated.

TCF,

you are not talking about the asian pressings on Sun Shine records don't you? Because those are from Japan (at least this is what some japanese guy told me) and they have different variations of the cover layout: some only have this unbelievable thin plain paper sleeves, others have this thin papar covered with plastic (like Nitro described) and others again have plain paper sleeves (much thicker paper).

Sounds terrible. The scratchy sound is almost louder than the music, which is quite good, by the way. Are these records pirates?

Prancinghorse,
The coloured vinyl records I have are deffinately Taiwanese pressings. They were released on labels like "First" & "Hawk".

Nitro,
In such, these records are NOT "bootlegs" as they are as official as could be at the time. Just released on re-used vinyl (many times re-used) & with very poor & cheap recording techniques & systems.

As far as I can tell, these Taiwan pressings were intended to be sold only in Taiwan, not made for export. They do not have the 'look and feel' of releases licensed from or otherwise authorized by the copyright holders, so I suspect that they are indeed pirate recordings.
